Diarrhea - A potentially life treatening symptom - What to do

Posted by

Part of being prepared and self sufficient is knowing how to deal with situations that can become life threatening.

Diarrhea is one of them.

Diarrhea is passing 3 or more loose or watery stools in a day.

What could cause it?

  • Food Poisoning ( produce that did not get properly cleaned or food that was under cooked)
  • Contaminated water ( in a hurricane or major disaster, water sources that were once clean could become contaminated with different bacteria or viruses.  Cholera, Dysentery, E. Coli and Typhoid infections can cause diarrhea.

Diarrhea can lead to malnutrition, if the food passes through the body too quickly so the body isn't able to absorb nutrients, but most of all, it can lead to dehydration and in severe cases lead to death in just hours, especially if the person is also vomiting and not properly cared for.

Make clean water:

With a Big Berkey Water Filter

Even if the person is not thirsty, she or he should sip clean liquids every 5 - 10 minutes.

Make a rehydration drink:

Take 1 liter/ quart of clean water

Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt ( Mix, It should be a little less salty than tears)

and then add 8 level teaspoons of sugar. ( You can use raw sugar or molasses also)

Optional:

If you can, add a 1/2 cup of fruit juice or mashed ripe banana to the drink, they contain potassium and will help the person accept more food and drink.

If the person is severely dehydrated you may need to give rectal fluids, also known as an enema.

You will need:

A clean enema bag

A cloth or towel to place under the person

600 ml ( a little more than a pint) of warm, clean water or even better, if you have the rehydration drink mix above use it instead.

Apply the enema and let the liquid run in through the rectum very slowly. It should take about 20 minutes.

If the person is in shock seek medical help if you can, if you can't, you can give another enema in an hour.

Since diarrhea is caused by germs, it would be good to have antibiotics on hand, like Super Silver, oregano oil, etc. (some even recommend fish antibiotics, supposedly they are the same kind as for human consumption. Do your own research on this one.)

Also, over the counter Anti-diarrheal drugs are also something worth stocking up on.
