11 Trillion gallons of Water and Not a drop to Drink!

The headlines from the recent flooding in south Carolina.

Water Purification Options

Water Water Water

Too much causes trouble - floods etc. and too little to drink and we get dehydrated.

Water is one of the most essential things that humans, plants, animals and all living things must have, at least on this planet.

Clean Drinking Water is becoming scarce in some places, so being able to purify water is essential.

There are different options on how to purify or create safe drinking water:

One technology uses Ceramic and Carbon Filters to remove unwanted contaminants, like Bacteria, Viruses, Protozoa and Chemicals.

These filters come in various sizes and combinations, from being very light weight, small and portable, to bigger Gravity Water Filters for Home use.

For example the Katadyn Water filters or Berkey Water Filters.

These units do not require electricity and will work with either gravity or they have a handpump, where you work the pump.

Filter elements will need replacing at some point, depending on water quality and capacity, so spare filters are a good item to have on hand.

But, what do you do when you run out of spare filters and cannot get anymore?

Of course you can bring water to a boil, this will ensure that bacteria, protozoa and viruses in the water are destroyed, but it does not remove any chemicals or other contaminants and dissolved solids from the water.

Water Distiller - Non Electric

To get really pure water there is another option, which is called Distilling.

The Non- Electric Water Distiller, can be used with any heat source, i.e. wood stove, propane, even a campfire.

The distillation process uses evaporation and condensation to separate pure, fresh water from its contaminants:

Steam rises leaving behind dead microbes like bacteria, viruses and parasites, dissolved solids, salts, heavy metals and other substances.

Low boiling light gases are discharged through the gaseous vent.

Steam is condensed in the three- level stainless steel assembly tray

Then the steam distilled water flows through the tubing into a suitable collection/ storage container.

Some people wonder: What do you do about replacing the minerals which have been removed in the distillation process?

According to research the minerals that exist in tap water are of an inorganic form and are not beneficial to the bodies system. Minerals that the body needs are in an organic form that one would get from foods and fresh vegetables.

Well, we hope this answers some of the questions you might have, about which Water Purification method might work best for you or maybe you consider it wise to have several options available to you, for different circumstances.

Storing water for any emergency like the floods in the Carolina's, would have really helped save much pain and suffering.

We have a large selection of storage containers. See the picture at the right.

More about water and water storage will follow in a future blog.
